When Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7, he began by providing his listeners a list of promised blessings. "Blessed are the poor in spirit...blessed are the meek...blessed are those who mourn."

Sometimes, this list can confuse us. Why are these characteristics the prerequisites for receiving God's blessings?
